2020 March for Moms and Advocacy week

Monday May 4th was the fourth annual March for Moms rally, typically hosted on the Washington Mall but instead brought to our computer screens this year. The March for Moms team assembled an amazing group of speakers including politicians, advocates, parents, and health care providers. “For far too long, motherhood has taken a backseat in our health care system, and it has had devastating and deadly consequences that have been exacerbated by COVID-19. We are gathering to fight for every family so they can grow with dignity,” said Katie Shea Barrett, Executive Director of March for Moms. “Now more than ever, we must come together to develop sensitive and innovative policies to address the needs of mothers and expecting mothers.”

Expecting More partnered with March for Moms and artist Lisa Marie Thalhammer to develop a piece of art that represents the mission of the event and our goals for creating a world in which every person can grow their family with dignity. Lisa Marie says: “I created this artwork for the 2020 March for Moms Community Town Hall to express the love and tenderness of mothers and to advocate for their safety and health. Hands hug a rainbow womb without judgement expressing equal care for the well-being of both mother and child. In addition to being inspired by the interconnections of the body’s chakra energy centers, the 13-color spectrum also represents the female reproductive cycle, which corresponds to the lunar month (28 days) and equates to thirteen cycles over the course of a year.”

If you weren’t able to make it in person, you can catch a recording of the event on YouTube. Leading to Mother’s Day 2020, March for Moms and Every Mother Counts have also partnered on a call to action for you to contact your policy-makers in local, state, and federal government to demand policy action that supports pregnant, childbearing, and postpartum people in the response to COVID-19. Please consider taking action today in honor of a mom or birthing person in your life!
